 " The Estimation of Hurricane Surge Probabilities "

Dr. Resio was a team leader of the IPET (Interagency Performance Evaluation Taskforce) project from 2005 to 2008, which conducted a forensic study on the  New Orleans Hurricane Protection System during Hurricane Katrina. As part of the study, Dr. Resio co-developed the new JPM-OS method for estimating the storm surge risk in coastal zones including New Orleans. Dr. Resio has published numerous papers on storm surge and wave modeling as well as risk analysis.

Dr. Resio will be talking about a new probabilistic method for estimating the risk of storm surge and inundation in coastal regions.

The Estimation of Hurricane Surge Probabilities
Don Resio
This presentation will give a brief review of historical methods used to estimate surges for design and planning purposes and will discuss why some of these methods are not appropriate for future critical design considerations.  Next, the presentation will summarize some important advances in surge modeling implemented following Hurricane Katrina and will discuss the development and implementation of the new Joint Probability Method – Optimal Sampling (JPM-OS). In conclusion, the application of the JPM-OS in areas within the Gulf of Mexico and in the estimation of very, very low probability surges for highly critical applications (such as the potential limitation of nuclear plant locations) will be discussed.
