To all of you Florida "County Listers,"

Gulf Islands Nat'l Seashore ( http://www.nps.gov/guis/index.htm ) has sections in Escambia County, in Santa Rosa County, and in Okaloosa
County, FL. There are also sections in Mississippi, but that's not addressed here.

If you were birding on the outer beach and down near the fort (built 1834), you were in Escambia. Inside of the old fort, there is a small Visitor's Center, but it is not the main one. This is where the "bike trail" begins, and this trail is also the Green-tailed Towhee trail starting at the parking lot and running east over a little bridge.

If you birded the outer beach area called Opal Beach, about halfway between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach,
then you were in Escambia.

If you birded the area at the south end of the Navarre bridge, and immediately to the east or west of the south end of that bridge, you were in Santa Rosa Co.

If you birded the Naval Live Oaks section on US Hwy 98 (where the Headquarters and main Visitor's Center are) on the eastern edge of the City of Gulf Breeze you were in Santa Rosa County. There is the main Visitor's Center here that's located on the soundside (south side) of US Hwy 98.

There is a tiny section of Gulf Islands in Okaloosa County on the north side of US 98 just
east of Ft. Walton on the SOUNDSIDE (north side) of the highway.

Are you thoroughly confused yet? However, I hope this helps clarify.
Lucy Duncan
