Good morning,

My thoughts are that professors and learning center professionals should never decide what accommodations any student should receive. The student disability services office on a campus should have professionals who can review a student's documentation and determine what accommodations should be legally provided to ensure there are no unfair advantages or disadvantages for any student. On our campus, professors know that the faculty accommodation letter presented by the student has the documentation in the SDS office to support the accommodations listed for that particular student. Any professor who does not provide those accommodations is open to personal liability or civil action. So if we as professors and learning center professionals decide what accommodations a student should get without support documentation, we may be opening ourselves to action for providing a student with an unfair advantage. We should leave it to the disability specialists.

Have a great weekend,
Elaine

Subject: Lab assistants

Hi,
I'm working with a biology professor who is teaching a student with Asperger's.
The professor wants the student to have the accommodation of a 1:1 lab assistant
to help the student to monitor her behavior in the lab.  She asked if our
Accessibility Services Office would pay another student in class to serve this
role.  The professor feels that this is a reasonable accommodation that should
be offered to all students with Asperger's.

Has anyone had a similar experience to this?  How was it handled?

Thanks,
Pam
