All the students at Fork's High School around TWILIGHT's protagonist
Bella have very white teeth, highly visible when they smile, which
they do a lot, a characteristic associated with Americans. The
ethnically diverse HS student body was chosen, says the director,
to reflect Myer's readers. Forks appears to be near the border
between the USA and Canada.

Edward has Asiatic eye lids, and he looks exotic.  The Cullens, with
their piano, Edward's journals and large music collection, associate
with old world cultures. Bella chooses to play Edward's Debussy
"Clair de Lune" record in his room. According the book of Native
American legends Bella reads, old-world cultures (Egyptian, European)
had vampires; and Native Americans do not want to share their land
with vampires. Bella comes from a broken family, and chooses to join
the very pale-faced vampire family, with objections from her Native
American friends. This suggests that the film is about what family
Bella should stay with; she chooses her father's house.  I take that
to mean choosing old-world alliances while living on new world
territory, a version of American history.
