While unsucessfully searching for Whip-poor-wills this
evening I heard a Black Rail give a single "kiki do" call
in a clearcut in Bethea State Forest. The exact location
(Dotty;) was on Eddy Grade (not labeled in DeLorme)
the wide dirt road running from the end of CR 250 in
Taylor up to SR 2 at Eddy. The site was about 3 miles
sotuh of SR 2 which would also put it about 3 miles
north of the end of the pavement in Taylor. The bird
was conveniently situated exactly opposite Forest
Road 34. The area is somewhat marshy from all the
recent rain and Woodcocks can reliably be heard
peenting in flight here just after sunset. The rail did
not respond to a recorded call. The only other rail
I've had here was a Sora last year inearby in Eddy
though there is a record for King Rail. And that's county
bird 210.
