Karen,

Our tutors currently don't conduct any extracurricular activities, but I am in the idea stage. I am happy to share them with you. One such idea is for tutors (or myself, the Writing Specialist, and/or Lab Director) to hold various workshops of an hour each. Topics include Time management, how to study for a liberal arts test, how to study for a math test, how to take notes, and how to properly conduct research. The specialists and/or Lab Director would create the workshops, but the tutors would have the option in how it is presented (putting information in a Powerpoint presentation, etc.)
Beyond that I do not have any other ideas, but am open to any information disseminated on the listserve.

Sincerely,

Chris Elder

Subject: Activities beyond tutoring for student staff

Hi everyone,

I hope your summer is off to a roaring start; we're in the midst of Orientation and looking ahead to fall 2010.

We want to start engaging our student staff in activities for the center beyond their tutoring duties. For example, we're thinking of having them assist more with marketing as well as conducting workshops, etc. For those of you who currently engage your student staff beyond tutoring, could you describe some of the things they do for you and how you make it happen-additional tutor certification perhaps?

If they conduct workshops for you, which ones and do they create the presentation themselves? If you have a Student Advisory Council, what are they charged with and how often do they meet?

A description of anything your tutors do beyond tutoring would be most helpful. Thanks, in advance for your help with this.
