In addition to Freeman (2004), I also found chapter 2 in Scott's "Social Network analysis: A handbook" (2000) interesting regarding SNA's historical roots.

Lin Freeman's The Development of Social Network Analysis: A Study in the
Sociology of Science is a must read.
