The most complete works I know of are those of Linton
Freeman ...
Freeman, Linton C. (1992). Social Networks and the
Structure Experiment. In L. C. Freeman, D. R. White & A. K. Romney (Eds.),
Research Methods in Social Network Analysis (pp. 11-40). New Brunswick, NJ:
Transaction Publishers.
Freeman, Linton C. (2004). The Development of Social
Network Analysis: A Study in the Sociology of Science. Vancouver, BC - Canada:
Empirical Press.

it is not complete by any means. Russ Bernard was very helpful in putting
it together with me. Lynton Freeman also wrote a short history which I
think is on the INSNA site and maybe even in wikipedia. There is a short
history outlined in Wasserman and Faust 1994.
linton freeman's book is the definitive history so far. it is available on
amazon, here
i reviewed the book in SN 27(4):377-384
