The Center for Network Science in collaboration with the Department of
Political Science at the Central European University (CEU), in
Budapest, Hungary are advertising a two-year political networks
post-doctoral position. We have a strong preference for someone to
start in the fall of 2011 but will consider applications of candidates
who can only start at a later date. (Inability to start by September 1
should be clearly noted in the application package.)
The candidate is expected to have a PhD or have defended their
dissertation by the beginning of the position. Successful applicant
should have an elaborate research agenda with a focus on network
analysis in the political context (such as, but not limited to,
politicized business networks, policy networks, legislative networks,
social movements, power relationships, political communication flows,
international networks of countries or non-governmental organizations,
or politically important infrastructure networks). The candidate will
have the option to use datasets available at the center, for example
data on business networks, international trade, or energy delivery
infrastructures. In addition to academic research the candidate will
be responsible for setting up a website/blog on political network
analysis that targets non-academic audience, on issues of political
corruption, social movement networks, elite change, political activism
online. Finally, the candidate will be responsible for writing grant
applications together with relevant faculty.
The two-year position is created within the framework of the “CEU 20th
Anniversary Postdoctoral Fellowships” to commemorate 20 years of
academic activity at CEU. The successful candidate will receive a
competitive stipend, will be eligible for a health plan and will have
access to the same research and academic travel support funds as
Central European University (CEU) is a graduate research-intensive
university specializing primarily in the social sciences. It is
located in Budapest, and accredited in both the United States and
Hungary. CEU’s mission is to promote academic excellence,
state-of-the-art research, and civic engagement, in order to
contribute to the development of open societies. CEU offers both
Master’s and doctoral programs, and enrolls more than 1500 students
from nearly 100 countries. The teaching staff consists of more than
140 resident faculty, from over 40 countries, and a large number of
prominent visiting scholars from around the world. The language of
instruction is English.
The Center for Network Science is emerging as an international center
of excellence in network science research; this year we host NetSci.
The Department of Political Science has both US and European
accreditation and an impressive ranking within Europe.
The application package should consist of a single PDF file titled by
your full name with (1) Application letter (not exceeding 1200 words),
(2) CV, (3) Contact information of four references (including e-mail,
phone number, mailing address, and a short description of relationship
with the applicant), (4) Transcripts (unofficial is OK, official ones
will have to be presented before an offer is made), (5) Copy of PhD
diploma or letter from supervisor describing the applicant’s progress
on their dissertation (6) And two writing samples (one can be
co-authored). Application package should highlight the candidate’s
training and research relevant to both network and political sciences.
Review of candidates will begin the first day of May and will be
offered to the first suitable candidate. We accept applications until
the end of the 2011 calendar year if the position is not filled in the
