UF Water Institute Students:
 
 This is a friendly reminder for you to submit an abstract to the 3rd University of Florida Water Institute Biennial Symposium that will be held February 15 - 16, 2012  at the J. Wayne Reitz Union, on the University of Florida Campus.  Note that although the conference is generally focused on Nutrient Dynamics, Policy and Management in watersheds student poster presentations will be accepted on any subject pertaining to water. 
 
Student poster authors are eligible to compete for "Best Poster" awards based on the quality of the abstract, poster, and discussion. Three poster winners will receive prizes of $1000 each to be used as funding to support future participation at a national conference.
 

 Plenary speakers for the Conference include:

  • Dr. Ellen Gilinsky, Senior Policy Advisor, Office of Water, Environmental Protection Agency, "Numeric versus Narrative Nutrient Criteria for Florida"
  • Professor Larry Band, Voit Gilmore Distinguished Professor, University of North Carolina,  "Sources, Cycling and Control of Carbon and Nutrients in Urban and Agricultural Watersheds”
  • Professor Dan Childers, Director, Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER, Global Institute of Sustainability, Arizona State University, " Peak Phosphorus and the Sustainable Phosphorus Initiative"
  • Professor Andrew Sharpley,Professor of Soils and Water Quality, "Cycling and management of phosphorus in agricultural  systems", University of Arkansas.

We invite you to submit an abstract for the 3rd UF Water Institute Symposium focused on Complex Challenges and Integrated Solutions for Nutrient Management in Watersheds.

This symposium will bring together social and physical scientists, engineers, academics, policy makers, water managers, industry and utility representatives, lawyers, students and the public to explore emerging issues related to nutrient sources, dynamics, management, and policy.  Presentations are sought that focus on new research, education, policy, and technology developments in the following areas: 

·         Understanding natural, anthropogenic and legacy sources of nutrients

·         Nutrient dynamics and enrichment impacts in aquatic ecosystems

·         Efficacy of nutrient source control strategies

·         Innovative biological, physical and chemical nutrient reduction and recovery technologies

·         Social, behavioral, and economic aspects of nutrient management

·         Governance approaches to nutrient management
