RE: February 1: Latin American FLAS Fellowship Application Deadline

The UF Center for Latin American Studies is soliciting applications for FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Academic Year Fellowships, supported by the US Department of Education, for training in Brazilian Portuguese and Haitian Creole.

For graduate students, the fellowship provides tuition and fees for 12 graduate credit hours per semester, a stipend of $17,000 for fall and spring semesters and GatorGradCare health insurance coverage.

Fellowships are awarded on a one-year basis.

Applicants must be (or applying to become) full-time UF graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents.

Priority will be given to applicants pursuing a master's degree or graduate certificate in Latin American Studies.

Each semester, recipients must enroll in at least three credits of Portuguese or Haitian Creole and at least three credits of Latin American area studies. They are also required to take language proficiency exams and complete online reports about their fellowship each semester.

After the fellowship period is completed, recipients will complete a short survey about their job placement every two years. Academic Year 2012-2013 recipients will complete surveys in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The application deadline is February 1, 2012.

Applicants must submit:

(1) FLAS Academic Year Application Form, available online here: http://www.latam.ufl.edu/Funding/documents/FLASApplicationAY.pdf.

(2) Two-page statement of purpose describing how the study of Brazilian Portuguese or Haitian Creole and Latin American area studies will benefit your program of study and career plans.

(3) Two recommendation letters accompanied by Release Forms, available online here: http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/pdf/ferparelease.pdf. One of the letters should be from your graduate advisor, unless you are a new UF applicant.

(4) UF academic transcripts. New UF applicants may submit photocopies from previous universities or colleges.
