Hi Jim.

The first time I came across this topic was in Bonnie Erickson's paper where Kadushin and Abrams' (1973) paper on the social structure of Yugoslav opinion-makers is discussed. Erickson addresses some of the problems associated with collecting influence data in this context. Kadushin (2005)<http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S037887330500016X> also has a good discussion of his social network research on elites.

Erickson, B. (1979) "Some Problems of Inference from Chain Data", Sociological Methodology, Vol. 10 (1979), pp. 276-302.

Kadushin, C., and Abrams, P. (1973) "Social structure of Yugoslav opinion-makers. I: Informal leadership". In A. H. Barton and others (Eds.), Opinion-Making Elites in Yugoslavia. New York: Praeger.

Good luck!
