The first time I came across this topic was in Bonnie Erickson's paper where Kadushin and Abrams' (1973) paper on the social structure of Yugoslav opinion-makers is discussed. Erickson addresses some of the problems
associated with collecting influence data in this context.
Kadushin (2005) also has a good discussion of his social network research on elites.
