Hi,
From social network analysis point of view, you may be able to study
central authors in a network (e.g. using degree and betweennes centrality),
understand clusters, and study strength network ties among authors (e.g.
who publish with whom). You may also study institutional, country, and
regional leval collaboration patterns, and much more..it is basic kind of
analysis and may provide some clues.

You can easily do it using UCINet, Pajek, or NodeXL, etc.

Thanks

Khan
