The city of Chicago has been working to increase green urban areas and repurposing abandoned land. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has provided a $1.5 million grant to convert an old meatpacking facility into a center for urban agriculture. The center will feature aquaponics, underground farming, and a brewery. There will also be a food business incubator and outdoor growing systems. The center will be powered by an anaerobic digester that will divert 27 tons of food waste per day from surrounding businesses.
