Meg,

Margo Murray is THE best when it comes to the subject of mentoring. In the business world, her name and mentoring are practically synonymous. I would suggest reading Murray's book, "Beyond the Myths and Magic of Mentoring: How to Facilitate an Effective Mentoring Program." Even though the focus is on mentoring in business, the models she offers will help to define/redefine your program and chart out a plan for continuous improvement. Another text, Peer Mentor Companion (M. Sanft, M. Jensen, and E. McMurray), is specifically written for peer mentors at Utah Valley State College and is chock-full of case studies and training activities. Together, I think, these resources can help you develop an effective evaluation of your peer mentoring program. Evaluation results will help determine changes/revisions to your training, in-service, and professional development for peer mentors. On another note, you may want to review the CRLA Int'l Mentor Training Program Certification (http://www.crla.net/imtpc/index.htm). Whatever you do, I'll be interested to hear about your progress.

Subject: Peer Mentoring - Resources

Good morning,

We are entering our second year with our peer mentoring group (called Protégé) that works to support at-risk students manage their academic commitments as they transition to college. I was wondering if anyone had any good resources (books, articles, etc.) to assist with the on-going training of the mentors? Does anyone have any feedback from a similar program on their campus?

Thank you,
Meg Kiley
