American International College (AIC) is a private, coeducational institution located on a 60-acre campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. Founded in 1885, the College has 3,500 graduate and undergraduate students. The College offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through the School of Arts, Education and Sciences, Business Administration, Health Sciences and Continuing Education. In addition, at the graduate level, AIC offers doctoral programs in Education, Psychology and Physical Therapy. The President
Dr. Vincent Maniaci was named President of AIC in 2005. Previously, he was Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., from 1997-2005. He also served as Director of University Development at the University of Tulsa from 1994-97. 
Dr. Maniaci earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California-Berkeley in 1981; a Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco in 1985; and an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. 


The Curtis Blake Center (www.aic.edu/curtisblake)
Since 1969, the Curtis Blake Center has provided highly effective, research-based programs for individuals with specific learning disabilities, in particular, developmental reading problems.  The Center currently employs 75 full and part time staff members working in three different locations and responsible for five major service programs. These include a comprehensive diagnostic service, a tutorial program, an intensive summer instructional clinic, a full curriculum day school (for approximately 60 elementary and middle school students) and a comprehensive support program for approximately 80 learning disabled AIC undergraduates.

The Diagnostic Center
The Diagnostic Center provides services to children, adolescents and adults who have academic and accompanying social difficulties while in school, or who experience the effects of those difficulties as they function in the workplace.

The Tutorial Program
The Tutorial Program is designed to provide one-on-one or small group teaching using research- based strategies that may not be available in the student’s regular school program. Program services are tailored to the individual strengths and weaknesses of the student and tutors are trained to use those techniques that are well researched and proven to be effective.

 The Summer Reading Program

In the Summer Reading Program students are provided with four weeks of one-on-one sessions with experienced tutors. Candidates for this clinic typically present below grade level performance in one or more areas involving oral language, decoding, comprehension, spelling or written expression

The Day School
The School is a private, special education resource, approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education to provide a full-day program for children ages 6-16 who are of average or above average intelligence, but experience specific difficulties in written language skills, mathematics or non-verbal aspects of language.

Supportive Learning Services
AIC's close-knit community thrives on close relationships among students, faculty, and staff. It’s an environment where the individual strengths of students are highly valued. For those who need a different approach to learning, the Supportive Learning Services Program is available. This fee-based program consists of regular one-on-one tutorial assistance and study skills workshops tailored to a student’s specific needs.
The Position
The Executive Director of the Curtis Blake Center reports to the College Provost. The new Executive Director will replace Paul Quinlan who will retire at the end of the 2011-12 academic year. Dr. Quinlan has had a stellar career at American International College and in leading the Blake Center for many years. The Executive Director will lead and manage a staff of highly-skilled professional educators implementing five well respected programs serving the learning disabled throughout the Pioneer Valley at the elementary, secondary and college level.

In moving forward, the Blake Center is looking to build on its long history of success and its reputation for excellence. To do so, the Executive Director will be expected to design and implement new initiatives that will broaden the Center’s reach, enhance and strengthen its current programming and generate new revenue. A new focus on marketing, community outreach and fundraising will be a significant part of the Executive Director’s day-to-day activities and responsibilities.

Specific Responsibilities
Among a variety of duties, the Director will:

• Continue to promote high standards of academic performance and achievement for students and staff;
• Function as the principal liaison between the Blake Center Programs and the College;
• Function as the principal liaison between the Blake Center Programs and their principal   stakeholders: students, parents, public school personnel and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE);
• Provide vision and leadership to the strategic day-to-day functions of each of the Blake Center Programs;
• Assume the lead role in maintaining the high quality for which the Center has become known while seeking ways to expand its offerings in the educational marketplace;
• Supervise the directors of these programs, including the responsibility for hiring, managing, motivating, evaluating, and mentoring them, and indirectly, their reporting staffs;

• Work collaboratively with the entire campus community to create an increased awareness of the important role played by the Blake Center, both internally and externally;
• Establish goals, design and implement initiatives to enhance the Center’s recognition and revenue stream through marketing (including consistent updates to the web site), fundraising and public relations initiatives;
• Manage the Center’s budget, remain current regarding education mandates and insure the Day School’s continued approval by the DESE.
Qualifications
This is a very special opportunity to lead and manage the future direction of the Blake Center and its exceptional programs. Experience with the field of learning disabilities, is very much preferred. However, the Blake Center staff is highly experienced in this discipline and, therefore, we are considering others whose experience relates closely to the position requirements. Experience in academic administration, child psychology, special education or other relevant educational programming models will be considered. An appropriate educational background in education, psychology or related field required. Candidates with a PhD will have preference. A minimum of ten years of successful and progressively responsible experience managing in a multi-faceted and complex organization is essential.
