Today, Friday, July 27th, Peter Thayer (Thayer Birding Software) and I ventured out to the Palm Beach County Ag Fields near Belle Glade in search of migrant shorebirds, terns, etc. We were not disappointed. Of the 75 or so species seen, these were the highlights. 1.9 miles south of CR880 on Browns Farm Road in the flooded field near the big white building on the west side of the road, along with the Stilt and Least Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, Black-bellied & Semipalmated Plovers, Black-necked Stilts, etc., we found one American Avocet and a Wilson's Phalarope. Black, Least and Gull-billed Terns were also present. At the King Ranch on US Rte 27, we found at least three Upland Sandpipers, both yellowlegs and a few other shorebirds and ducks & waders. Slightly further north on the east side of the highway, there were many Fulvous and a few Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks as well as scores of Glossy Ibis, etc. On CR827A, near US Rte 27, we found Solitary and Pectoral Sandpipers and other more common peeps, shorebirds and waders. Four or so Barn Owls were at the Bald Cypress grove along the Miami Canal. Bank, Barn and Cliff Swallows were also noted on Browns Farm Rd. Orchard Orioles were still at Tory Island in Belle Glade. Common Nighthawks were everywhere. All in all, it was a great day of birding in the scorching Florida summer heat. . . .
