Post-doctoral position in networks and innovation


The Center for Network Science at the Central European University (CEU),
in Budapest, Hungary are advertising a one-year post-doctoral position
in network science of creative teams. We have a strong preference for
someone to start in October of 2012 but will consider applications of
candidates who can only start at a later date. (Inability to start by
October 1 2012 should be clearly noted in the application package.)


The candidate is expected to have a PhD or have defended their
dissertation by the beginning of the position. Successful applicant
should have a research agenda with a focus that includes personal
networks and innovation, and should possess strong skills in analyzing
large network datasets.  Experience in handling large datasets and
familiarity with a high-level programming language (e.g. MatLab, R, C)
is a must.  Experience in analyzing dynamic network data is considered
as a plus. The candidate will have access to a large dataset on the
dynamics of collaboration networks in the history of recorded jazz,
spanning several decades, and including about a hundred thousand
musicians, tens of thousands of recorded albums, and a wealth of data on


In addition to academic research the candidate is encouraged to set up a
website/blog on creativity and networks, that targets non-academic
audience.  Finally, the candidate is expected to write grant
applications together with relevant faculty.


The application package should consist of a single PDF file with (1) an
application letter (not exceeding 1200 words), (2) CV, (3) the contact
information of four references (including e-mail, phone number, mailing
address, and a short description of relationship with the applicant),
(4) transcripts (unofficial is OK, official ones will have to be
presented before an offer is made), (5) copy of PhD diploma or letter
from supervisor describing the applicant’s progress on their
dissertation and (6) two writing samples (one can be co-authored).
Application package should highlight the candidate’s training and
research relevant to network science.  Review of candidates will begin
mid to late June and will be offered to the first suitable candidate. 
We accept applications until the end of the 2012 calendar year if the

The annual post-doctoral research stipend is €24,000 EUR (around $34,000
USD) and includes a health insurance plan.  Additionally, candidate will
be eligible for 1100 EUR travel grant per school year and will have the
option to apply for the competitive CEU Research Support Scheme (5000
EUR) in collaboration with faculty and students.  (Consider the
competitiveness of this package given the tax-free nature of all of
these stipends and benefits and the low Hungarian cost of living.)  CEU
is a private international graduate school for the social sciences in
Budapest, Hungary.  English is the language of instruction and
operation.  The Center for Network Science is emerging as an
international center of excellence in network science research.
