Journal of Obesity: Special Issue on Social Networks and Obesity

Social networks have been shown to impact weight and associated behaviors. Obesity and weight loss have both been found to cluster in social networks, and longitudinal data show that socially connected individuals become increasingly similar in weight status over time. Moreover, individuals have been shown to model the eating and activity behavior of their social ties. Given this emerging evidence that weight status, eating, and activity are affected by social ties, more work is needed to (a) elucidate the mechanisms by which social networks impact weight and related behaviors and (b) develop and test intervention paradigms that harness the impact of social ties to promote weight control. We invite authors to submit original investigations or review papers that further our understanding of the effects of social networks and social influence on weight, eating, and physical activity behavior throughout the lifespan.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

* Impact of social ties, social influences, and social structure on the adoption and/or maintenance of obesity-related behaviors

* Mechanisms by which social networks and social influences impact weight, eating behavior, and physical activity

* Methods and analytic models to assess social processes and social network dynamics

* Processes involved in the development of new social networks to influence obesity-related behaviors

* Interventions that leverage social influence to promote behavior change in obesity prevention or obesity treatment initiatives

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jobes/guidelines
