Bio-economic studies of the potential impact of climate variability and
climate change on agriculture depend on the accuracy of the characterization of the underlying production processes. We examine
wine grape production
in Australia and characterize
agricultural water demand and evaluate the potential impacts of water policy reforms on farming households. A
dynamic programming model is developed to analyze optimal management decisions over the life of the crop, thereby improving our understanding of agricultural water demand and, by extension, the possible benefits from
water trade.
