Hi Hank.

I don't think you will have much luck finding Limpkins and Red-cockaded Woodpecker (last Nassau Co. record in 1978) in the Nassau/ Duval Co. area.  However there are a couple species I can help you with.

Bachman's Sparrow-  They can be quite vocal this time of year at Cary State Forest on the Duval/ Nassau Co. line.  The area can be found along Highway 200 near the town of Bryceville.  The habitat is slash pine interspersed with saw palmetto.  Listen for their elaborate songs.

Swallow-tailed Kite- This bird can sometimes be spottted in Northern Nassau Co.  Take Hwy 301/Hwy 1 north and turn east onto Lake Hampton Road.  About a mile down the road turn left (north) onto Scott's Landing Road.  Then continue toward the St. Mary's Fish Camp.  They can often be seen circling above the St. Mary's River.  Further down Lake Hampton Rd. turn left onto Penny Haddock Road.  I have had STKI (and Mississippi Kite) along this route in the past as well.

Good luck and good birding.

Subject: [FLORIDABIRDS-L] RFI: Jacksonville Area

> I will be hopefully in the Jacksonville area shortly and would be interested in finding Limpkins, Bachman Sparrows, Red-Cockaded Woodies and Swallow-tailed Kite. I was here for a few days last year and tried for them in Osceola Forest but dipped on all.   I would appreciate any info on finding any of these. I can get away at various times of day when opportunities open up.
Thanks for any help.
