Hello BESTers,

This article is an interesting read. It follows the travels of Thomas
Culane, a National Geopgraphic Explorer, as he tours the Middle East
sharing sustainable technologies on a "Renewable Energy and
Sustainability Road Show'. He traveled to Iraq, Israel, and Turkey
demonstrating a biogas system complete with an InSinkErator for
grinding, solar cookers and photovoltaics, water pumps and purification
system, wind generators, LED street lamps, and wood gasifiers. His
journeys, which includes donning body armor in Iraq and having to plan
everything in secret to avoid kidnapping, puts everything in
perspective, and makes our outreach activities seem like a cake walk.
The enthusiasm he received is encouraging. While the violence in the
Middle East is a endlessly complicated issue, developing sustainable
technologies and improving the standard of living gives us hope that the
region will one day be socially, environmentally, and economically
sustainable.

Have a great weekend,
Ryan
