Greetings,

Very nice photos, Danny.

This might be a case of structure trumps color.  It has a Clay-colored Sparrow structure.  To me, the colors seem to have a blueish cast to them.  I love nature photography also and I know that different lighting conditions can really mess with "normal" coloration.  There is a lot of gray, especially in the face, where you normally see a buffy color.

There normally is more contrast in the auricular patch versus the supercilium and the submoustachial stripe, and maybe a bit of a thin line around the perimeter of the auricular but there is always individual variation.

The Chipping Sparrow, even if colors are not normal, would have that eyeline and a low contrast auricular patch.

Beadle and Rising (2002) states that "hybridization with Brewer's, Chipping, and Field sparrows has been reported".  That type of hybrid would show a more grayish look to it, like your photo.

Whether it is just the lighting giving it this coloration (likely) or a hybrid, a Clay-colored Sparrow is always a nice find.

Jon Greenlaw is a Sparrow expert.  I wonder what he would say?

I'm sorry for the mess with flickr, but they have changed something,
Anyhow here are the 3 birds. The first is unknown (I thought it was a Clay-
colored) The second is a Clay-colored. The third is  a Chipping. I don't
know if the unknown is a type of hybrid or not.
