The UF Institute of Black Culture is currently seeking a graduate assistant for the 2014-2015 academic year. This appointment is for 20 hours per week, starting in Fall 2014. This is a 9-month graduate assistantship starting mid-August through mid-May. This position includes an in-state tuition waiver for 9 credit hours per semester, $5,500 stipend per semester and Gator Grad Care health insurance.


The mission of the Institute of Black Culture (IBC) is to promote and affirm Black culture, history, leadership, and scholarship. The IBC coordinates a variety of cultural, social, and educational programs focused on the Black experience at the University of Florida, in the United States, and across the diaspora. The Institute of Black Culture functions as a resource for Black students, student organizations, the University of Florida, and the surrounding community by collaborating with campus and community stakeholders to actively support efforts to recruit and retain Black students in higher education.


The graduate assistant would work alongside the IBC Director in supervising and mentoring undergraduate ambassadors, helping coordinate social justice programs and cultural events, establishing campus partnerships for collaborative projects and trainings, and other duties as assigned. Students of all backgrounds with an interest and passion for advocacy, mentoring, multicultural affairs and student development are encouraged to apply.


The graduate assistant must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, possess the ability to adapt well to changes and work well with people from diverse backgrounds. A positive attitude are a must.


Previous advocacy work and mentoring experience are preferred. Strong writing and communication skills are a plus. All qualified applicants will be considered.
