The discussion around note taking has been rather useful, thank you to all who have contributed. Since our students need to be taking effective notes rather immediately, and the shift in relational instruction isn't happening as quickly as necessary, I have been encouraging students to draw their notes, or portions of them, to help 'see'; both literally and figuratively, the connections between concepts. A great resource with examples of ways in which this works is Michelle Zoss's article "Visual Strategies for Teaching Student's Note-taking," which can be accessed easily through the following link: http://gateacher.wordpress.com/2006/11/07/picture-notes/ . The drawing method has proven successful with most of the students who have chosen to use it and has been fun to use. Zoss offers several ways one can approach drawing notes and other resources as well.
