There is a position opening in my department (Academic Center for Excellence and Writing Center) for an Assistant Director of Access Services (formerly Disability Services).

Here is the position summary:
This position reports to the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence. This person is responsible for assessing the needs of individual students with learning disabilities and developing accommodation plans for students based on these needs. The incumbent works with at risk and learning disabled students, providing advice and counsel on academic and interpersonal issues. In addition, the incumbent coordinates with faculty and other university departments to insure effective support for students with learning disabilities.

Essential functions of the Academic Success Center (ASC) include advising undeclared majors (University Exploratory Studies Program), offering Supplemental Instruction (SI) in high-risk courses, making available Writing Center services for undergraduate and graduate students, offering Academic Coaching appointments, providing information and referral, and overseeing developmental coursework in the Academic Learning Services (ALS) department. The ASC employs 14 full-time professional staff members, 8 graduate teaching assistants, and approximately 95 student employees, and operates with an annual budget of approximately $1.5 million.

The Director of the ASC is responsible for unit-wide strategic planning including the use of research, data, and assessment results to inform goal setting and evaluation, as well as thoughtful decision making in regards to resource allocation and budget management, and in pursuit of growth and innovation where applicable. The director provides leadership and vision for a high-functioning unit comprised of multiple, distinct programs which operate under a shared vision and shared values. The director also works to establish awareness of, and connections and partnerships with, units across campus, and works to situate the department within the larger university context.


*         50% Unit Leadership and Supervision: Responsible for providing overall leadership to the Academic Success Center (ASC), including the Writing Center, University Exploratory Studies Program, Supplemental Instruction, and Academic Coaching, as well as campus outreach, information and referral services. Directly supervise the Assistant Director of the ASC, the UESP Head Advisor, the Assistant Director of the Writing Center, the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction, and the Assistant to the Director; oversee the work of approximately 20 full-time staff and graduate teaching assistants. Responsible for strategic planning, unit-wide assessment, budget and resource allocation, and the alignment and support of programs and employees towards the ASC mission, vision, and goals.

*         20% Lead Collaborations, Establish Partnerships and Engage in Campus-Wide Efforts: Continue to foster teamwork and cooperation between academic units and student support units. Collaborate with college/department advising offices, other units in the Division of Academic Success and Engagement (Academics for Student Athletes (ASA)); Educational Opportunities Program (EOP)); and partners in student affairs, including but not limited to Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Disability Access Services (DAS), Intercultural Student Services (ISS), New Student Programs and Family Outreach (NSPFO) and University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS)).  Develop and support purposeful networks and partnerships to improve referrals and support services for students. Work with university-wide taskforces, committees, and initiatives specific to student success, engagement, and retention, including programs and initiatives both within the Division of Academic Success and Engagement and the broader institution. Contribute to and share information and best practices for peer education, academic support, and student learning and persistence across campus.

*         15% Academic Learning Services (ALS) Department Chair: Provide leadership and coordination of the ALS department, including course proposal and development; curriculum review and improvement; and instructor training and support. In addition, implement assessment practices that align with accreditation and with best practices in developmental education, and provide administrative oversight for units offering ALS courses.

*         10% Training and Staff Development: Create and promote ongoing learning opportunities for all ASC staff. In collaboration with the program leads and coordinators, engage all staff (including student staff) in ongoing professional development pertinent to their work, projects, programs, and interests, and relevant to the current needs and trends of the university and higher education. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting attendance at regional and national conferences, facilitating all-staff meetings and retreats, and promoting ongoing development around diversity and social justice.

*         5% Expand and enhance cultural competency and diversity efforts in the Academic Success Center and the University.


*         A Master's degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field.

*         A minimum of three years of experience in developing and implementing academic support programs (peer education, supplemental instruction, academic advising, promotion of study strategies or related work).

*         A minimum of three years of experience supervising full-time professional staff, including all facets of personnel: hiring, training and development.

*         Administrative management experience developing, managing, and leveraging a budget, as it pertains to personnel/staffing and related resources, in order to aid in strategic planning, fiscal management, and efficient day-to-day operations.

*         A demonstrated ability to implement full cycle assessment and to utilize data in planning, delivering, evaluating and demonstrating results in programs or initiatives over the short and long term.

*         A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

*         A proven ability to nurture collaboration and develop innovation within a unit and demonstrated success with team building and the development of community around shared vision and values.

*         A proven ability to develop collaborative and purposeful networks and partnerships among multiple constituents, stakeholders, and colleagues, across campus, and with individuals and communities of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

*         Teaching experience at the university/college level, and knowledge of curriculum design processes.

*         Experience with peer-to-peer learning programs and facilitative pedagogy.


*         Doctorate or terminal degree.

*         Six years of leadership experience with progressive responsibility in a higher education setting.

*         Experience working with and an ongoing commitment to understanding the needs of a diverse student population that includes international students, online/distance students, high achieving students and students experiencing academic difficulty.

*         Demonstrated experience fostering the development and growth of individuals including full-time staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

*         Demonstrated understanding of quality academic advising practices.

*         Participation in or contributions to research, professional organization(s), and a demonstrated commitment to continuing personal education.

*         Experience teaching academic learning services courses.

*         Experience with leadership of multiple programs under one unit.
