Jennifer, Faculty at Antelope Valley College submit a behavior intervention form for plagiarism which is sent to me and my colleague in the Writing Center by the Office of Student Services. The student is responsible for contacting one of us, not the other way around, regarding an academic honesty workshop which includes attending one or more writing workshops (research paper, MLA and APA format), viewing a video on plagiarism, and meeting with us to discuss his/her individual situation and how to avoid plagiarism in the future. We give the student proof of attendance which he/she then takes to the Vice-President to have the hold on their account lifted. As a result of this approach, the rate of recidivism is very low I am glad to report. I also encourage faculty to let students submit their papers to Turnitin.com and receive their results. If the percentage of matched text is high, students should be given another chance to revise their citations before they re-submit the final product. Both approaches are educational and less punitive.
