Hello BESTers,

A while back, I posted that Sainsbury's, the UK's 2nd largest
supermarket chain, pledged to divert its food waste and has since
reached zero waste. Now a Sainsbury's in Cannock has become zero
(fossil-fuel) energy. Food waste that can't be recovered to feed the
hungry is sent to a nearby anaerobic digester. A dedicated cable (1.5
km long) was constructed earlier this year to deliver the electricity
from the generators fueled by the biogas to the store itself. The store
is now able to power its day-to-day activities using the electricity
produced from its food waste. This is a great example of a closed loop
system that is setting the standard for food waste diversion.

Have a great weekend,
