First case —X tells Y’s boss, Z, bad things about X—is also possible. X has screwed up and looking for advice. He is afraid to talk to his own boss but knows that Y's boss Z is a nice guy. Z is helpful and impressed by X's honesty and tells Y about it. Y becomes a friend of X....

Likely or not is a question, but this possibility cannot be ruled out a priori.

Oops!  Should be...

A new way of “closing a triangle” — X tells Y’s boss, Z, bad things about Y.
