This isn't for everyone, but if you can pull it off it's awesome.

My TA (who was a theater major) and I staged a rapidly-escalating argument in front of our FYE class. The students, of course, did not know that it was staged, and it was pretty clear that they bought into it.

After "the reveal"--which was worked into the script for the argument--we had a "pair-and-share" discussion about the conflict: how did it escalate, what could each of us have done differently, etc.

In retrospect, I wish we'd had a third party record the whole thing, because like any eye-witness event there was some confusion/disagreement about who had said exactly what when.

Even without that, it was unquestionably the most memorable session of that course for everyone involved.

Subject: Group and Conflict Resolution Exercises

Hi all,

I am teaching a first-year seminar, and I am looking for ideas for group and conflict resolution exercises. Would anyone have a lesson plan and activities to share? Any resources or other ideas?

Thank you,

John Paul
