Post-Doctoral Position in Historical and/or Organizational Network
(starting date: February 1, 2016).
Our team is pursuing research on empirical questions at the
intersection of political sociology, economic history and
organizational analysis, with an emphasis on the methodological
tools of quantitative network analysis. Among others, we have
contributed to understanding entrepreneurship in transition
economies, the network organization of early modern overseas
trade, and the network foundations of political mobilization. Our
group is embedded in a dynamic and supportive research environment
provided by the School of Social Sciences, the Mannheim Center of
European Social Research (MZES), and the Graduate School of
Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at the University of Mannheim.
We are seeking a motivated candidate who is committed to an
innovative research agenda in historical and/or organizational
network analysis. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in sociology or a
related discipline, such as economic history, organizational
behavior or political science, among others. Successful applicants
will combine a strong substantive background in one or more of
these fields with a solid experience in quantitative network
analysis. Ideally, this background should be documented by
international peer-reviewed publications and a strong publishing
potential. Programming skills in R, Python or related environments
are an advantage. Fluency in English is a requirement.
The full-time position is available for 2 years, and may be
renewed contingent on a successful research output. The successful
candidate should also be committed to excellent teaching in the
B.A. and M.A. programs in sociology (2 courses per semester).
Teaching may be offered in English. Contributions to the research
activities at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research
(MZES) are expected.
The salary is set in accordance with the German public sector
scale TV-L (E 13, 100%). The University of Mannheim is an equal
opportunity employer. Candidates with disabilities will be given
preference in case of equal qualifications. The University of
Mannheim seeks to increase the percentage of its female faculty
members in research and teaching. Thus, qualified women are
especially encouraged to apply.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, a statement
describing their research plans, teaching experience, publications
and professional accomplishments, and two letters of
recommendation. Review of applications will begin on November 30,
