    Cargill is an American based company that produces food, agricultural, industrial, and financial products around the world and has recently decided to reduce its use of antibiotics on its U.S. cattle supply by 20%. This includes 8 feed lots of cattle with 1.2 Million cattle in total. This impacts a lot of cattle and the meat that we eat! The antibiotics that will be eliminated are known as shared-class antibiotics, or antibiotics that are important in human medicine and farm animals. Cargill made the decision to reduce shared-class antibiotic use on its feed lots due to consumer drive for reduction of antibiotic use and analysis of research on reduced antibiotic use. Consumers want to lessen antibiotic usage in beef cattle in order to reduce possible leaching of antibiotics into the environment and to better ensure that antibiotics are effective for a long time and not over-used. This is not the first time a reduction in antibiotics on animal agriculture had been implemented by Cargill. In 2014, the U.S. turkey industry eliminated growth-promoting antibiotic use and this proved successful for Cargill. Cargill is also making their farming operations more sustainable by training their cattle producers to have efficient animal husbandry practices and limited antibiotic usage under the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's Beef Quality Assurance program. By 2018 they plan to have 90% of their operations Beef Quality Assurance certified. Research is important to further improve reductions in antibiotic use and Cargill will continue to actively find ways of replacing human antibiotic use in cattle to other alternatives, while still maintaining the health of the animals and the consumers. Collaborations with researchers, cattle ranchers, and universities will aid in innovative nutrition feeding practices for cattle to rely less on antibiotics. With these methods, focus will remain on the best way to nutritionally feed the animals so that they are healthier and do not require antibiotics. Research is important and I hope that more innovations can be made to transform beef cattle animal husbandry practices.
