Apple announced on Monday a “Shared iPad” feature in their new 9.3 iOS. Here is a link (sorry about the advertisements) that explains how it could work in developmental education labs.

Faas, R. (2016, Jan 14). Shared iPad in Apple’s iOS 9.3 update is a big deal. Retrieved from

Others are at:

and the new, free Classroom App:

This might alleviate some of the concerns mentioned below.

Also, a workshop we presented at a community college in Houston last August reviewed mobile apps for different academic disciplines defining mobile as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. These apps provide support structure for Kimberly’s Student Support Center. Here is a link:

Finally, consider attending the 16th annual Technology Institute for Developmental Education co-sponsored by CRLA and NADE on August 8-12, 2016 either here in San Marcos, or online synchronously. There you will learn how to integrate these apps into your work.

Kimberly,

We are looking forward to using tablets in our tutoring area also. We have the same goals that you have listed.

We intend to keep our current sign-in computers. The tracking information is available to our administrators and it will allow us to tie into historical information. The information gathered is time in/out and broad category of study.

With the tablets (when they come), we expect to use the app, Smartsheets. The one issue we will have is your #4. Yes, tutors will have access to the work log of others. We work in an open, walk-in lab so actually all of the tutors working know the students in the tutoring area, their area of study, and the tutors working with those students.

We expect to share the tablets with the students. However, tutors will need to log-in with their employee ids while the students will use their student ids. Our Smartsheets will only be available to our tutors.

We are looking forward to the data we can collect which will include actual tutoring time for CRLA level standards.

Hello,

We are currently considering using iPads or another form of tablet in our Learning Commons to log in visiting students, submit tutor session comments and details, as well as utilize them as a learning tool for tutoring and supplemental instruction.

We are aware of many apps that would be beneficial in our tutoring/SI sessions, and would love to stream line the check-in procedures, but we have recently been met with several concerns from our technology committee.

1. How can multiple people log into the same iPad?
2. How can we ensure that individual or employee student IDs tied to what is happened on network-connected devices?
3. What kind of technology will allow us to quickly change between users when we start new tutoring or SI sessions?
4. Is it possible to use use apps without one user having access to the work of another user?

Any information regarding the use of tablets in a tutoring center would be greatly welcomed.

Thank you,
Kimberly Courtwright

We've experienced several difficulties with implementing iPads in our
Tutoring Center. Here are the main challenges:

   - If your campus has a VPN, it is troublesome to log back in when the
   iPad goes idle
   - Navigating TutorTrac is difficult
   - You must have a card reader with an associated app (which requires
   troubleshooting of its own)
   - It is not user friendly to sync Safari and the app
   - Our center is remote so security of the tablets is an issue
   - It takes more time to check-in students on the iPad than it does a
   laptop

If other centers have been able to implement their iPads successfully, I
welcome solutions to help us optimize our investment.

Hello, Kimberly, Bridget, and Michael,
I'm particularly interested in this topic since I'd like to develop a card-swipe check-in for both tutors and clients. I wonder if PC-based tablets would be more flexible than an iPad. We currently do a lot with paper sign in and spreadsheets.
I look forward to learning more,
Jeffrey
