Hello BEST members,

Last week, Christina talked about algae-based water bottles. This lead us into discussing how packaging can be more sustainable. One new company in Sweden, Tetra Pak, is a prime example. One year ago Tetra Pak created Tetra Rex containers. "These are the world's first fully renewable liquid food cartons and are manufactured exclusively from fiberboard from Forest Stewardship Council certified resources and bio-based plastic derived from sugarcane."
Tetra Rex is currently expanding to multiple countries around the world, and will be in the U.S. starting this month. A study found that most consumers don't mind paying more for a recyclable and renewable container. The plastic in the containers are chemically identical to those made from oil. Since they are from sugarcane they are also carbon neutral. While recycling Tetra Rex products is greatly pushed, recycling is still an energy intensive process. Mindful packaging companies like Tetra Pak will be critical in a transition to a more sustainable future.
