Cascades Sonoco Introduces Industry’s First Water-Based Barrier Coating Allowing the Creation of Recyclable, Repulpable and Compostable Take Out Containers

July 12th, 2016

Hello BEST community,

In our last post, we have seen how the production of fully renewable packing is a viable and up-and-coming option in mainstream markets. In addition to fully redesigning the materials used in packing, one company has found an alternative to using polyethylene to coat food cartons. Instead of plastic, Cascades Sonoco has created FlexSHIELDTM; a water-based barrier coating that can replace traditional food take-out containers such as Styrofoam with recycled paperboard. The shield can be applied directly to the paperboard, and will protect against water, oil, and other liquids. What makes the FlexSHIELDTM so revolutionary is that while is still possesses many of the characteristics of polyethylene, it can be composted along with the container in industrial compost facilities. Companies and businesses’ continued implementation of small sustainable changes, such as shifting from plastic to new compostable coatings, with hopefully continue to incite other sustainable changes within packing companies and industry alike.
