Hi Leslie,

We have a college of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England and our center serves those students in several capacities. The main service we provide is content tutoring but students also access writing support (as they prepare residency applications) and learning specialist consultations.

Content tutoring is only available during the students' first year and is provided by second year students who apply and are trained by us. The class size is 175 students and we hire 10-12 tutors. Last year 50% of the incoming class used at least one tutoring session.
Writing support and learning consultations are delivered by professional staff in our center but we serve the whole campus, the medical students are a fairly small part of the total students on campus.

Our connections with the College of Osteopathic Medicine have been forged over time. This has been a particularly good year for collaboration with them because the course directors for the first year have been really wonderful about their communication with us. It can be challenging for administration to understand that graduate students need academic support, in some cases, they need quite a bit.

I'm happy to chat or answer off list if you have more specific questions.

Cheers,
Mary

Subject: Medical Programs and Academic Support Needs

Hello Colleagues! I'm meeting today with our Provost for a new doctoral program that will begin in 2018-2019 for Naturopathic Medicine. If you work at an institution with a medical program or science fields with graduate students, I'm seeking resources and information to look at the needed academic support for that program and staffing structure. I'm currently a one person office and need to make inroads in why I cannot remain a solo operation with our strategic plan. Just looking at the med students that will be coming my way sooner rather than later, I want to provide as much details as possible. I'm also trying to find resources that outline the types of questions that institutions should be asking PRIOR to bringing on academic programs in which you know will have a larger incoming class and the support systems that should be in place with them.
