RE:	International Students: Register Now for Fall 2017 UF SPEAK Tests and Academic Spoken and Written English Classes

SCHOLARLY WRITING

 

The Fall A Scholarly Writing class will begin September 5, 2017 and will end October 13, 2017.

 

One section of the class will meet 5:10 p.m. to 6:25 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in 214 Matherly Hall.

 

A second section of the class will meet 5:10 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in 214 Matherly Hall.

 

The last day to request enrollment or drop the class will be Monday, September 11, 2017.

 

A Fall B section of the class (if enrollment allows) will be offered October 16 through December 1, with no classes held Thanksgiving week. 

 

Scholarly Writing (formerly EAP 5845 and EAP 5846) is designed for international graduate students who wish to improve their written academic English skills. It teaches students to identify different writing styles through text analysis. The course seeks to develop students’ ability to write concisely with natural cohesion/flow. It also addresses common grammatical issues such as tense, article, and preposition usage. These aims are achieved through direct instruction, group work, practices, and individual writing times.

 

The Scholarly Writing course is offered as a non-credit class lasting six weeks. This class is not eligible for a tuition waiver and is not offered as a distance education class. The cost of a six-week section is $350.

ACADEMIC SPOKEN ENGLISH

 

All international graduate students whose first language is not English (official first language of home country) and who may be appointed as teaching assistants (with lecturing/lab responsibilities) need to have a passing score (45 or higher) on a UF SPEAK Test (administered on the UF campus), or a TOEFL-IBT Speaking test (23+).  

 

In addition, any international graduate teaching assistant whose first language is not English who scores a 45 or 50 on a SPEAK/TSE test, or 23 - 27 on a TOEFL-IBT Speaking section and who is appointed to teach (with lecturing/lab responsibilities) must enroll, during their first semester teaching, in a 3-credit EAP 5836 course.

 

International graduate students appointed as TA-G (grading and office hour responsibilities only) are neither required to pass a SPEAK test nor eligible to enroll in EAP 5836. SPEAK test dates, times and locations for the Fall 2017 semester are as follows:

ADVANCED ORAL PROFICIENCY

 

The Academic Spoken English unit will offer a six-week, non-credit, advanced oral proficiency in English course.  The purpose of this course is to diagnose student fluency problems in English and to introduce self-practice methods and online resources to aid students interested in advancing their oral language proficiency.  While not intended as a SPEAK Test preparation course, a commitment to improving spoken fluency in English may result in an improved assessment on oral proficiency tests.  Students will exit the course more aware of their individual fluency challenges and with a clear idea about how to make progress on their own. 

 

This class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during Period 5 (2 p.m. to 3:15 .m.) in 320 Yon Hall.  The class will start on Monday August 28, 2017.  The cost of this course will be $350 for the six-week course.  This class is not eligible for a tuition waiver and is not offered as a distance education class. Registration in this course will be limited.
