Cuba and the United States in the 21st Century
UF Center for Latin American Studies 66th Annual Conference
Gainesville, FL - The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida will be hosting its 66th Annual Conference on March 30 – April 1, 2017 at Emerson Alumni Hall on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. The event is free to UF faculty, staff, and students and $50 for non-UF affiliated guests. The theme of the conference is “Cuba and the United States in the 21st Century.” The event will begin on March 30th at 6:00 pm with keynote speaker, Alejandro de la Fuente (Harvard University), discussing the topic of Race, Nation, and US-Cuban Relations, which will take place at the UF Latin American and Caribbean Library Collection, Smathers Library.
The conference will explore political, policy and economic dynamics between the two countries from diverse perspectives - agriculture, business, trade, natural resources and the environment, economics, the arts, humanities, and the social sciences. The event will also show-case on-going collaborative research between faculty at UF and the University of Havana on the agricultural sector and marine and terrestrial ecosystems, collaboration between the UF Libraries and the Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba and with national and regional archives, as well as collaborative initiatives between UF faculty and Cuban artists.
Academic panels will focus on these themes and will feature presentations by distinguished academics and policy-makers from Cuba and the United States. We will have a special Spoken-Word Poetry and Hip-Hop performance at The Wooly, Downtown Gainesville, on Friday March 31st at 8pm.
Founded in 1930, the mission of the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies is to advance knowledge about Latin America and the Caribbean and its peoples throughout the hemisphere. With over 170 faculty from colleges across UF, the Center is one of the largest institutions for interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach on Latin America, Caribbean, and Latino Studies.
