Hi Miao, The file I have only has 8 lines also -- I think they make these example files short on purpose so people don't have to download big files, but maybe they say that in the lesson text because it seems pointless to be writing code to analyze just 8 lines of data. When going through examples like this in class, I usually say something like "we're using a small set of data so you can see exactly what our commands are doing, but you can imagine if you had 1,000 lines in this file it would make more sense to do things this way rather than by hand." Hope this helps, Erica Erica Christensen PhD Candidate, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Department University of Florida ________________________________ From: Discussion of teaching informatics skills <[log in to unmask]> on behalf of Sun,Miao <[log in to unmask]> Sent: Thursday, August 10, 2017 6:58:14 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Unix-shell teaching materials Hi Matt, I forgot to mention, in Chapter 4(https://swcarpentry.github.io/shell-novice/04-pipefilter/), it says: The file data-shell/data/animals.txt contains 586 lines of data formatted as follows: 2012-11-05,deer 2012-11-05,rabbit 2012-11-05,raccoon 2012-11-06,rabbit ... However, the data-shell file I downloaded from one of the link you send, it only have 8 lines. Is this wrong file or the animals.txt under data-shell/data/ is damaged? If you're teaching in the August workshops, today and next week are perfect times to talk about the lessons and coordinate with your co-instructors. Also, Plato helpfully reminded me that the Carpentries expect instructors to complete their certification checkouts within 3 months. For people who attended the training this year, that date is 8/22 which is right around the corner. You can ask for an extension but you must do so before 8/22. I see that teaching demo time slots are mostly full up through 9/3 (and I also see a lot of you in those time slots too which is great) so if you have not scheduled a demo, you should email the Carpentries today with when you expect to be able to finish your checkout. (See checkout page below for address.) If there is anything I or any of the other instructors on campus can do to help you finish, please let us know. https://swcarpentry.github.io/instructor-training/checkout/ I hope to see you this evening!
