The Harvard Graduate School of Education is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow with interests in adolescent development and strong quantitative expertise. The initial full-time appointment will be for two years, starting on July 1, 2017, with the possibility of a renewal depending on available funding. The position involves contributing to a multisite collaborative longitudinal study of adolescents’ ethnic-racial identity and peer networks funded by the National Science Foundation. The person hired into this position will be based at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts and directly supervised by Dr. Adriana Umaña-Taylor, but will also work closely with a postdoctoral scholar at the collaborating site led by Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake at the University of Michigan, and with Dr. David Schaefer, a renowned expert in social network analysis at Arizona State University, who will offer individualized guidance and mentorship in this area.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Psychology, Sociology, Education, Human Development, or a closely related discipline by time of appointment. In addition, successful applicants will have significant expertise in quantitative methods, with a strong preference for social network analysis (e.g., Stochastic Actor-Based Models and Exponential Random Graph Models). A significant track record of publication, excellent academic writing skills, and experience with management and analysis of large datasets are preferred.

The postdoctoral fellow’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: data collection, data management, data analysis, preparation of publications and conference presentations (both collaboratively and as lead author), and supervision and mentoring of other research staff. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

Given the design of the grant (i.e., multiple sites, multiple waves of data collection), the postdoctoral fellow at each site will receive mentorship in conducting large-scale, multi-site, longitudinal research with an ethnically diverse sample, and will develop their data analytic, research, and writing skills. The nature of the project will also allow the postdoctoral fellows to further develop their advanced statistical techniques (e.g., social network analysis, latent growth curve modeling, multilevel structural equation modeling). The postdoctoral fellows will be expected to apply their developing skills to analyzing, presenting, and publishing data related to the goals of the grant as well as their specific interests.
