Wow! Cindy, Kate, and Loren—I am feeling some love this morning and my work day started 10 minutes ago ☺

I would be happy to chat with anyone. I find it so much easier if we set up a time to talk on the phone. I am learning a lot from the people I have spoken with thus far. It’s so nice to have these conversations!

Fridays are generally best for me, but I can talk Mondays and Wednesday between 8:30-10:00 and 2:30-4:30 CSD.

Let me know what works for you!

Regards,
Jenny Box

I run the Academic Recovery program at my institution. Since I took over the program, our return to good standing numbers have improved. I would be happy to share what I am doing.

Hi Kerby,
Short answer is yes. Explanation of the one credit is as follows:

We charge a flat tuition from 12-17 credits. Probation students cannot go over 17 credits. Their total tuition amount cannot be more because of adding this class, but they do take up a one credit space on their schedule for this class and must work around it so they do not go over 17 total credits.

The credit is not counted towards graduation credits but can be used to move up in class standing and for financial aid purposes.

Linda,

Does your college require the student to pay for the 1 credit class? I have wanted to implement this, but the push back I always get it making students pay for a credit they don’t “need”. I would argue that this class is probably more beneficial to them being successful long term, but our college is trying to avoid adding classes that are not part of their program.

Thanks

Hi Holly,
Too many years ago, we required students on probation to have bi-weekly one on one meetings. The follow through on this was dismal. The number of no-shows and subsequent emails to reschedule was a large chunk of staff time.
We moved to having a one credit class and rolling the one on one meetings into the class as an assignment. So, for first-time probation students, they are taking a weekly class and completing 5 one on one meetings during the semester.

For us, this is working quite well.

Happy to share more if you need.

Morning Holly,

Currently, I've been working on a proposal to help this segment of students in the college as well as first-term students. What I have come up with so far is Academic Coaching! The essential services that I was thinking about are some of the following.

Tutoring and Modified Supplemental Instructions

     * Include study groups and test preparation
     * Guided instructions through student success modules
     * Human Relations or Reading and Learning Skills courses can be of help
     *   Strengths Quest…at etc.
     *
     *
Hopefully this will provide some sort of foundation. I’m still in the process of this proposal and would also like any additional feedback.

Thank you all in advance

Subject: Academic Recovery Programs

Hello,

I am writing because I’d like to research what best practices are for assisting students with academic recovery (i.e., getting off probation). Are classes best practice or have they been determined as unsuccessful? Are one-on-one meetings and/or peer mentor meetings a successful approach?

Our academic recovery classes, no matter what we try, seem to not be what the students need.

Best,
Holly
