About the Job
The Supportive Services Program within the Academic Writing and Learning Center at the University of Minnesota Duluth seeks applicants for a full-time, nine-month, nontenure-track faculty position (yearly renewable contract) at the Instructor/Assistant Professor level. Appointment begins August 21, 2017; classes begin August 28, 2017.
The main duties of this position are teaching related and may include the following courses: College Learning Strategies; Tutor, SI, Mentor, and/or TA Training; College Writing Strategies; Personal Development; and Practicum courses. Expectations include developing courses and programs to provide learning support for target populations. In addition, the instructor provides individualized academic support to students on success skills, such as time management, test taking, note taking, critical thinking, metacognition, and knowledge of campus resources and services. The instructor works closely with campus partners, including academic advisors and others involved in initiatives aimed at retention and student success, to promote AWLC and its services as well as design new programs to meet emerging needs. This position functions interdependently with the Academic Writing and Learning Center (AWLC) team, including the director, the tutoring center coordinator, the ESL specialist, two additional faculty members, and the administrative assistant (see http://www.d.umn.edu/awlc). Some service, as relevant to the department, is expected. Additional responsibilities may include leading the program’s assessment efforts.
Required Qualifications: Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution; a minimum of two years’ college-level teaching experience (TA acceptable), excellent communication skills; and evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include education beyond a Master’s degree; more than two years’ college-level teaching experience; experience with diverse student populations; experience with assessment of student learning; experience with academic coaching or other college-level support courses/models; experience with CRLA tutor and mentor training; experience with Supplemental Instruction; a demonstrated interest in working with the academic needs of at-risk students.
