The University of Michigan’s Science Learning Center (SLC) seeks a highly motivated and experienced professional for our Tutoring Program Manager position. The Program Manager coordinates all aspects of the SLC Tutoring Program, including both the day-to-day operations and program development components, and the recruitment, training, and supervision of approximately 60 undergraduate science tutors. The program includes both drop-in and appointment-based tutoring with a focus on developing students’ long-term learning strategies. A strong emphasis is placed on tutor training, particularly around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and program evaluation and assessment. The Program Manager will also oversee the SLC’s Mentorship Program, which is entering the second year of a three-year pilot. The mentorship program, which includes one part-time graduate student assistant and approximately ten undergraduate mentors, provides support to students pursuing a STEM major with a strong focus on helping students who are underrepresented in the STEM fields. The Tutoring Program Manager reports directly to the SLC Associate Director and works closely with the SLC Study Group Program Manager to ensure the SLC’s academic programs are integrated and coordinated. The Program Manager also contributes to special projects and events, such as the Tutor Summit and Science as Art Contest, and collaborates with faculty and staff across the college, including key strategic partners such as the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), Newnan Academic Advising Center, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), and M-STEM Academies. The Program Manager is expected to participate in programming and provide student staff training and mentoring around learning center and tutoring best practices, with a particularly focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Tutoring Program Manager also coordinates with the math department to provide math tutoring during the spring and summer term, which includes some hiring and supervision of undergraduate math tutors and some work with math instructors. In addition to overseeing programs and staff, the Program Manager also oversees the physical space of the Tutoring Help Room, which includes coordinating with staff and graduate students from the statistics department who share space with the SLC. This position does require some evening and weekend work (approximately 8-10 times/term) for training, support during busy periods prior to exams, workshops, collaborations, and special events.
• Coordinate all aspects of a peer-based tutoring program supporting introductory science students as well as math students during the spring and summer term • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and supervise undergraduate peer tutors, peer mentors, and help room desk staff • Foster the educational development and personal growth of undergraduate peer tutors and mentors • Research and implement learning center and tutoring program best practices. • Develop and maintain tutor training materials and oversee development of instructional materials that support student learning in the sciences. • Implement a tutor training program that is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) • Organize and maintain reporting systems including recording attendance, agendas and activities, trends in usage, and preparing reports • Collect, analyze and distribute statistical reports on tutoring, mentoring and other student support activities as part of overall assessment plan. • Maintain tutoring facilities as a welcoming space for students seeking assistance. • Work with administrative assistant to monitor electronic scheduling and compensation of student workers. • Publicize programs to faculty, students, and staff. • Coordinating with the statistics department to manage the help room physical space • Collaborate with key strategic partners, including the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), Newnan Academic Advising Center, Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), POSSE Program, Douglas Houghton Scholars Program (DHSP), and college staff working with and supporting transfer students
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university • Minimum two years professional experience in the development and/or delivery of tutoring programs or related academic programs in higher education • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, faculty and staff • Sensitivity to needs of students struggling academically and ability to adapt to diverse learning needs • Exceptional organizational and management skills with demonstrated program coordination skills • Self-driven; able to set own deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks • Ability to analyze and solve problems and exercise good judgment • Excellent training and motivational skills • Ability to maintain integrity of confidential materials and student information • Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment • Strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated experience working in academic support roles and the supervision of tutors • Knowledge of student learning theory and the ability to apply best practices programmatically • Possession of at least one degree (undergraduate or graduate) in a STEM field, related degree, or experience. • Master's degree in higher education, student services, science education, counseling or equivalent
