Session Description
This webinar will describe the functional approach to learning and show how
it can be effective in training tutors. These questions will guide the
session: (1) What is the functional approach? (2) How can it be used to
develop leadership skills in tutors? (3)What strategies are used to help
tutors monitor their behavior, use specific communication strategies and
achieve a successful tutoring session? (5) What are the challenges of using
the functional approach and how can they be overcome? 

Nita Meola has spent 20 years as both an administrator and as an instructor
studying and practicing best practices in an academic support resource.
Meola spent time as a Director of the Writing Center at Columbia College
Chicago and as a Senior Director of the Learning Studio. She is a member of
multiple higher education organizations and is the Co-Editor of the Journal
of College Reading and Learning, a publication for the College Reading and
Learning Association.
