Writing Successful DDRG and GRF Proposals at NSF

Mantz. Please join the UF Department of Anthropology for a presentation and discussion about writing successful DDRG and GRF Proposals at the National Science Foundation, with Dr. Jeff
Mantz. Jeff will offer some tried and true advice for early career researchers thinking about applying for funding from units in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences at NSF. Although he will have some prepared statements,
this is intended as an open discussion, so bring your questions, concerns, and anxieties about proposal writing, and get ready to write a winning grant!

Mantz has been at NSF since 2012 and is a program director in cultural anthropology and a human subjects research officer.

Broader Impacts Funding Opportunity
The Thompson Institute for Earth Systems is soliciting proposals for projects that communicate or disseminate research discoveries about the Earth and its natural systems to our primary
target audiences, including: Florida K-12 schools, lifelong learners in Florida, and UF non-science majors. This RFP is intended for UF graduate students and postdocs, although undergraduates are encouraged to apply (and will be judged separately). The intent
of this program is to encourage the development of small projects that might be “add-ons” to existing, larger research projects, or to act as seed-money that will lead to additional funding. The budget request will not exceed $2,500 and up to four projects
will be funded. Deadline of October 15, 2018.

School Fall Professional Development Series
The
schedule for the Fall Professional Development Series is now available! Please follow instructions to register for the events. While registration is not required, it is helpful for planning purposes.
UF Diversity Graduate Research Symposium – October 31st, 8 am- 4pm
The symposium will include oral and poster presentations from graduate students at the University of Florida, with Dr.
Madhukar Thakur addressing the importance of diversity in research. The event will be interdisciplinary encompassing biological sciences, social sciences, humanities, computer science, engineering, math and physical sciences. Presentations
will be judged by post-doctoral trainees and faculty. Prizes will be awarded to presentation winners and there will be a raffle for attendees. This event is open to everyone that registers.
Graduate students can submit original research abstracts (3000-character limit, ~500 words) by clicking the link below. The
deadline to submit abstracts is Friday, September 28th, 2018.

Delivering Effective Presentations
There are three main things necessary to give an effective oral presentation. First, you must overcome communication apprehension. Second, you need to learn how
to organize your presentation, and third, you need to polish your delivery skills. This presentation discusses all three. Presenter: Dr. Diana Nagy, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication.

Career Development
Innovation Impact – A Four-part Workshop Series for Women Scholars
Innovation Impact is intended for female faculty members, post-doctoral scholars, researchers, and graduate students at the University of Florida and Santa Fe
College. Attendees can be actively engaged in research that has commercial potential, considering future research opportunities that might involve a commercialization dimension, or simply interested in the relationship between technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The program will consist of four workshop sessions, held once per month during the Fall semester. Each session will last two hours. The first session will be on September 19. Session topics will include:
- Session I: From Idea to Research market: Understanding the Commercialization Process
- Session II: Challenges and Opportunities Confronting Women in Commercializing Ideas and Technologies
- Session III: Understanding the Business of Commercialization When You Don’t Have an MBA (or any Business Background)
- Session IV: You are not Alone: Leveraging Resources and Sources of Support to Commercialize Interesting Ideas
