We also tried to have all first-year courses include writing, but departments like Econ, Comp Sci and Chemistry would have radically different training than the Humanities division did.

Since then, the writing requirement now has three levels: Argumentative, Craft and Product. In their first semester, a student must take either a FYC which qualifies as A or C, or they have to take a different course that semester with that level. That way, for instance, if you take the Calculus FYC you could also take College Writing during the first semester. Most, but not all , FYC have a writing designation of A or C.

Our Provost has suggested eliminating our composition courses (2 required) and teaching writing in the FYS courses which are mandatory.  Our faculty are not happy about this, especially those that teach in the FYS program but are from various departments (Art, Biology, Business, etc).  Are any of you doing this?  If so, would you share your syllabi?  If you have any pros or cons, please send me that as well.  We are a small (550), liberal arts college.
