Session Description:
Integrated Reading and Writing courses are becoming increasingly popular--for good reason. This session will cover design of a course organized in themed units that helps students learn critical thinking skills through a combination of reading, writing, and discussion. Best instructional practices for the course focus on metacognition, active learning, and collaborative learning techniques.
Facilitator:
Dr. Calisa A. Pierce, a Certified Developmental Educator, is an English faculty member and department chair at Bridge Valley Community & Technical College, and she also teaches online graduate courses in grant writing at Marshall University. Dr. Pierce presents regularly at national and state conferences, and her article “Research-Based Integrated Reading and Writing Course Development” was recently published in the Journal of Developmental Education.
