Hi Jenny,

 

Niagara University used to teach writing in the various fields but it proved to be too uneven.  Documentation styles were uneven and unless you were a major in that field, it often proved irrelevant to students.  (It’s not like students don’t change their majors!)   It was much more difficult to have standard minimum writing outcomes for faculty from various departments and disciplines.  We went back to our Writing 100 course.  You’re lucky to have 2 required courses as that’s what the NYS public schools require.  We’re private liberal arts (4100 students approx.) and having writing faculty has given all students a minimum background in writing for academics and other fields.  It’s not perfect, but it’s better than the other way.  Just my opinion.

Hello All,

 

Our Provost has suggested eliminating our composition courses (2 required) and teaching writing in the FYS courses which are mandatory.  Our faculty are not happy about this, especially those that teach in the FYS program but are from various departments (Art, Biology, Business, etc).  Are any of you doing this?  If so, would you share your syllabi?  If you have any pros or cons, please send me that as well.  We are a small (550), liberal arts college.
