Pat, We use Bb collaborate ultra for our virtual tutoring sessions. We also use Canvas as our LMS so we have created a Tutoring Virtual Room course we enroll students in who schedule virtual tutoring appointments. Our Bb collaborate is then housed within the canvas course so students can easily navigate to their virtual sessions. We have multiple campus locations so we have set up a virtual tutor email address where students can ask for appointments and then I schedule their virtual session. I really like collaborate ultra because I can create each session for each student and then view reports for that session later to help us track our virtual sessions. Plus, some of our hybrid courses use blackboard so we thought some students might already be familiar with this platform. We do let students connect virtually with tutors from our site locations, their work, their home, or wherever they have reliable internet. The only issue we have run into is students not having a good enough internet connection to stay logged into Bb collaborate if they are trying to connect off campus. Our plan is to have online tutoring just for writing and a select math course for the fall to see how things go. We are looking into using Bb collaborate as our platform. We initially considered using skype, but since we do have collaborate, we thought we should use what we have and lessen the potential for issues with connectivity. Another aspect of the pilot is that we will only be serving students at our branch campus in Syracuse, therefore, there will be no one using the service from their own computers initially. Any advice or input would be appreciated - thanks and happy Wednesday! I came across your response as I was reading through posts looking for any discussion about online tutoring. Your program provides both face-to-face and online tutoring. Would you be able to share how attendance to face-to-face tutoring was affected when online tutoring was offered? Was there a decrease of contacts? Did you still offer the same amount of tutorial hours and same subjects for face-to-face sessions? What dynamics changed for students utilizing the support services? We are going to begin offering online tutoring. I would appreciate your insight. Anna Cortese, M. S.
